Two things stand out about Shannon Brown’s run with the Los Angeles Lakers: his disappointing showing in the 2010 NBA Slam Dunk Contest and him marrying R&B singer Monica. Beyond that, Brown’s stint with Tinseltown’s finest was mired by numerous flashes of brilliance and zero in the way of consistency.
In June of 2011, the then 25-year-old opted not to exercise his option with L.A. The following season, Brown was signed by the Phoenix Suns. He averaged 10 to 11 points per game over the past two years, and did his damage on 42 percent shooting. He was pretty much the same exact player he was with the Lakers, just with more freedom to operate because the Suns had absolutely nothing in the way of offensive firepower.
This past weekend, Brown was sent to the Washington Wizards as part of a five-player deal centering around Marcin Gortat. In the aforementioned deal, Gortat, Brown, Malcolm Lee and Kendall Marshall head to Washington, and the Wizards’ 2014 first round pick plus Emeka Okafor’s expiring contract are sent to Phoenix.
According to Steve Kyler of HoopsWord, after Brown is cut he will most likely land with the Lakers.
All three expected to be waived by the Wizards -- word is Shannon Brown headed back to the Lakers.— Steve Kyler (@stevekylerNBA) October 26, 2013
RT @Legend825: if he does get released, where does Shannon land? ---> word last night was if he clears waivers, the Lakers.— Steve Kyler (@stevekylerNBA) October 26, 2013
The Lakers can use all of the athleticism they can get at this point, and Brown brings that in droves. On the other hand, seeing as they’ll have to clear a roster spot to bring him on, you have to wonder if the Lakers really want to add another guard or if they would rather hold out for another big.
Either way, we should find out the status of Brown-to-L.A. at some point within the next few days.
