Start ‘em Sit ‘em is our weekly look at favorable and unfavorable match-ups and how they might affect lineup decisions for your fantasy football team. Other than a few elite players, no one should be classified as a must start every week, and analyzing match-ups can go a long way to giving your team a weekly edge. If you have any start’em sit’em questions feel free to post them in our Fantasy Football Forum.
Week 9 Byes
Panthers, Lions, Jaguars, Vikings
Fred Jackson might be the MVP of this young fantasy season based on his average draft position however, also based on this fact you might have two other stud running backs. Then you see the fact Jackson is playing the Jets and might think your other backs are better options. The numbers don’t say that is the case however, the Jets are ranked 25th against the run this season. I see no reason why the Bills will not run the ball as Fitzpatrick will have trouble against their stout secondary. Jackson, like all year long, needs to continue to be a must start this week.
I would have rather have drafted Charles and lost him for the season early than have had to deal with the first round bust of Johnson all year long. He has had to hurt numerous fantasy teams as his name makes him a must start while his performance has been so terrible. Last week everyone figured was the week he would finally get back on track as the Colts were one of the worst run defenses in the league but Johnson looked slow and even ended up splitting (and losing the important carries) to Ringer. This week I figure Johnson to split carries again and until he proves otherwise he has to stay on your bench. Side note if you can deal him for anything of value – do it, his name alone should return a guy of decent value.
Any Redskin Running Back – including Choice
Just when Shanny only had two options to really hose owners with, he decided to add to the running back headache by claiming Choice off waivers. Now owners have to worry about the former Cowboys running back getting some action this coming Sunday. Furthermore, the Skins have had no luck running the ball as teams have sold out to stop the run. Defenses are daring either Grossman or Beck to beat them in the air. To add to a terrible situation for the Skins, the 49ers are the best in the business against the run allowing only 73 yards a game. Avoid all Washington Redskins this week if you can help it. (including wideouts and even Fred Davis, as he is dealing with a high ankle sprain)
Boldin has had back to back solid games but to be blunt, he got lucky with a trash touchdown vs the Jags and last week he faced a secondary that would get lit up by the top high school prospects. (yeah they are that bad and if anyone in that secondary is reading this –kind of cool you are reading FST but you know you stink). This week I think we see Boldin go back to an average to below average play. The key stat is the fact the Steelers have not allowed a reception over 40 yards this year but one time. That is crazy good. I expect Boldin to have a subpar game and not find the endzone this week in a great Sunday Night game.
Williams has slowly gotten better and better over the last few games and the main reason is the fact the Bucs have changed many of his routes. At the start of the season they were asking Williams to go deep and out jump corners. Well the fact all defenses watched the tape from last year and knew that was the majority of his catches they have been rolling a safety over the top of Williams on all plays. It took the Bucs a few weeks but changing his routes to slants and some over the middle stuff has given Williams new life. Of course in the redzone he is always a threat so I expect penalty of catches and a touch out of Williams this week.
We loved this guy coming into the year but due to breaking his hand on Thomas Jones’ face during a fight in the preseason he had not seen any action until Monday Night. He did not disappoint us one bit. The reason we loved Baldwin is the fact you cannot teach speed/height and he has both. He is a great complimentary wideout to Bowe and faces a weak secondary in the Fins next week so we expect more goodness out of another great rookie wideout. This is a man crush in the waiting……..look out DeMarco.
Here we go again, I feel like I am always writing about any quarterback that plays the Pats but with good reason – they are always a hit for me and always produce a big game. It is a mixture of needing to keep up with Brady and the fact the Pats have this bend don’t break terrible secondary. Eli has been impressive averaging right around 20 points per game in his last five starts. I don’t see how he is not a top five if not top three play this week.
The Cowboys are going home after a bad loss to the Eagles on Sunday Night. After this loss Cowboy fans are once again debating if Romo is truly a upper tier QB and everytime that happens he comes thru in a big way the following week. I expect this to be no different and Romo to come through once again. Seattle is a stout run defense and Cincy showed last week the way to beat them is in the air. Romo has a ton of weapons and I expect him to pour it on early and often hitting both Miles and Dez for long bombs once this game.
If you are in a standard one quarterback league I hope you are not evening thinking about starting Palmer – I don’t care about a bye week and the fact he got to work with the team. He was not great in his last full season and I will go on record as stating the Raiders might have made one of the worst trades in NFL history to get him. This week you might see the match-up and be in a 2QB league so you think you will roll the dice with Palmer, I think this is still foolish. Oakland is a run first team and Palmer will be handing the ball off quite a bit plus the Broncos are not as bad as a defense as they showed against the Lions last week.
Just about the only thing the Skins could do last week against the Bills was getting the ball to Fred Davis. Now, Davis is a physical big athlete but the Bills defense is one of the worst against the Tight End. This week the Jets have had a week to plan for the Bills coming off the bye and my assumption is they saw these holes in their defense. Sanchez has a good chemistry with Keller and should be able to move the chains by looking his way. I don’t think Keller will be a monster in this game but if you need a bye week replacement I think he is a nice fit in standard and even a better play in point per reception leagues.
Atlanta Falcons DEF
The Colts have scored over 20 points once thus far (just to put into perspective how much they miss Manning they scored 20 or more points in every game but two last year) and I don’t see them getting any better. Painter is just not Manning and this offense has trouble moving the ball, they are quite turnover prone, and they given up a ton of sacks. This just means pick up any defense playing them and let the points roll in.
