Mixed martial arts fans had a lot to be excited about when it came to the second half of the UFC’s 2013 calendar. There was Jon Jones finally getting an opponent whose last few showings made him a mildly intriguing challenger. There was Georges St. Pierre no longer being able to duck Johny Hendricks. The Cain Velasquez-Junior Dos Santos rematch, Ronda Rousey destroying Miesha Tate again and so on and so forth.
One of the really exciting bouts that flew under the radar, though, was Jose Aldo taking on Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis. After the latter destroyed Donald Cerrone and called out champs from every division beginning with women’s bantamweight and ending with heavyweight, this seemed like a thrilling, fight of the year-type showdown that could really give some prominence to the featherweight division. But then Pettis got hurt.
And instead we’re left with Aldo and his vicious leg kicks taking on a guy coming off an injury, who probably wasn’t even good enough to beat him when was healthy and not rusty.
Alas, this is what we’re stuck with. Here are the results for the UFC 163 main card.
Champ Jose Aldo vs. Chan Sung Jung via TKO - Round 4
Lyoto Machida vs. Phil Davis via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
