Manny Pacquiao Doesn’t Understand Why Juan Manuel Marquez Won’t Fight Him

Manny Pacquiao has joined the rest of the boxing community in wondering why Juan Manuel Marquez is displaying so little interest in fighting him again. While it is generally accepted that this is simply a negotiating ploy by Marquez and his people to get more money and have a little more say in how things are arranged for the fifth match, the logic that is being used to justify it is still bizarre.

If you go by what Marquez says, the reason he ‘doesn’t want to’ fight Pacquiao again is because he made his point last December. That point? Presumably him being the better boxer. However, as has been noted by everyone, including Pacquiao himself most recently, one win out of four tries doesn’t make you better than the other guy – even if that one win did come by way of an awesome knockout.

During a recent interview, Pacquiao was asked his thoughts on Marquez’s public reluctuance to grant him a rematch.

“If he doesn’t want to fight me then I don’t want to fight him either. So be it. It’s that simple. He says he doesn’t want to fight me because he won our last fight? Well, I am still ahead in the tally of our last four fights. I won two, lost one and dres one,” Pacquiao told the Manila Bulletin.

Which, of course, is the card he will understandably play until the end of time. Yes, Marquez won in more dominant fashion – but he only won once. Pacquiao won twice, and if the first bout had been scored correctly, he would have won three times.

“Marquez, according to news reports, doesn’t want to fight me for the fifth time. It actually is up to him,” he said. “Me? Well, everybody knows I’ll fight anyone. I am not scared of anybody. And that is the reason why boxing fans like me so much. I never avoid anyone. I don’t choose easy fights. I will fight anybody, anytime, anywhere.”

Either way, Pacquiao is making this pledge to his fans: one way or another, he will be fighting this September. Marquez or no Marquez, the Filipino star will take on someone before 2013 concludes.

“Tell them to be patient. Bob Arum and myself have been talking and will continue talking. What is definite is they’ll see me fight again come September. Not April nor immediately after that as speculations are going. Tell the public that it won’t be long before I make them happy again when I fight.”
