At this point, it would probably be wise to just stop listening to everyone in Manny Pacquiao’s camp. A mere week after telling the world that his No. 1 client had already decided on his next opponent and implying that an announcement was more or less imminent, Top Rank boss, Bob Arum, has officially changed his tune.
When pressed on the topic of who Pacquiao would fight this December during a recent interview, Arum offered a frustratingly useless response.
“I have no idea. I don’t understand what’s going on,” Arum told Ronnie Nathanielsz of the Manila Standard Today.
Now, if Arum had said that a week ago – nobody would care. Fans would simply chalk it up to Pacquiao not being able to decide on his next foe, and that would be that. The reason this latest answer is frustrating, though, is because Arum said just a few days ago that his guy had in fact decided on who he would fight next.
As noted on Opposing Views last Thursday:
During a recent interview with Brad Cooney of 8 Count News (via ABS-CBN), Bob Arum admitted that they had decided on who Pacquiao’s next foe would be, but that he would not divulge that info to the public.
“We're not in liberty to tell you who [he's fighting]... that's my instructions,” the veteran promoter said.
And yet, despite that, somehow we find ourselves back where we started.
At times like this it always helps to remember that Pacquiao is trying to choose between two people here. His only options as far as this December goes are Timothy Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez. That’s it. It’s amazing that a decision where you can only go in one of two ways has taken and is taking this long.
Something is wrong with this picture. The venue is booked for December so, in theory, Pacquiao shouldn’t be able to back out of his end-of-the-year bout. But something is definitely wrong here and, when it’s all said and done, it wouldn’t be particularly shocking to see Manny’s next fight look a lot different than we’re expecting it to right now.
