Lost in the euphoria of what was one of the UFC’s most exciting fight cards this past Sunday night was the extremely surprising news that revered trainer Shawn Tompkins had passed away at the too-young age of 37.
Tompkins has long been revered in MMA circles for his ability to get the most out of his fighters, most notably their striking acumen. By all accounts Tompkins’ reputation was that of a revered friend and passionate teacher. So, it sort of goes without saying Tompkins untimely passing has sent shockwaves throughout the MMA community.
Clarification on the Tompkins cause of death was revealed today by Sam Stout, a fighter and Tompkins brother-in-law. According to Stout, Tompkins passed away in his sleep over the weekend due to a heart attack. Stout broke the news to the London Free Press.
Tompkins was the rare individual who was seemingly universally loved by all who encountered him.
