Boxing Recap, Analysis: Paul Williams vs. Erislandy Lara

The main event is between Paul Williams and Erislandy Lara.  Williams is coming off of a KO loss to Sergio Martinez. 

Round 1:
They meet in the center.  Paul fires the jab.  Lara does a good job gettin inside.  Not the best start by Paul.  Lara lands a left and and right to the body.  There's two punches upstairs from Lara.  Lara lands another nice straight.  Now a jab.  Paul is taking some serious punishment in round 1.  Paul is towering over Lara and Lara is getting in and landing nice punches upstairs.  Lara lands a left to the body.  Paul is struggling with Lara's southpaw stance.  

Parker: 10-9 Lara 

Round 2:
Paul counters with a left to start the round.  Lara is getting the left hand in once again.  Paul lands a big left hand that backs Lara up.  Paul misses with a right hook.  Lara gets in with a lead right hand follows by a left again.  Lara lands a big left and Paul stumbles back into the ropes.  He ties up Lara.  Williams is not looking great in these first 2 rounds.  The ref is letting these clinches go on way too long.  Paul throws and misses a right hand that comes up short, which is hard to do when you have his reach.

Parker: 10-9 Lara

Round 3:
Willimas come forward again Lara lands a big left hand to start the round.  Williams misses with a combo.  Lara lands another left hook.  There's another left hook from Lara.  Lara lands yet another straight left hand.  Williams ducks another left hand.  Williams throws a combo, but gets clinched.  The ref tells Lara to stop holding.  Lara lands another big left hand.  Lara is up 3 nothing on my card.

Parker: 10-9 Lara

Round 4:
They come flying in throwing like crazy, but they end up in a clinch.  Williams catches Lara low and Lara takes the time to recover.  Paul misses with a double hook.  Paul ducks under another straight left.  Lara lands another left hand.  Paul is throwing punches like crazy which is usual for him, but the punches have no snap and are barely landing.  Paul lands a right hook.  Lara lands a right hook.  Paul is chasing Lara around the ring, but isn't capitalizing with any punches.  There Lara gets tagged with 3 left hooks.  Lara lands a big left hand at the end of the round.  Tough round to score at the end.

Parker: 10-9  Williams

Round 5:
Lara lands yet another big left hand in a combo.  And there's another.  I can't believe Paul is getting tagged with so many of the same punch that knocked him out.  Paul won't stop throwing.  There is a huge knot on the left side of Lara's head.  It was possibly caused by a headbutt.  They are really trading shots in there.  Williams is starting to land more punches now.  Williams is back to his old ways and is throwing everything he can in there.  

Parker: 10-9 Williams

Round 6:
The knot on Lara's head is enormous and it was caused by a headbutt.  It's reminiscent of Hasim Rahman years back.  They fight it out on the inside.  Paul throws his flurries inside.  Paul lands two uppercuts inside.  Lara lands a big left hand to the head.  Paul lands a right hook and a couple to the body.  Lara lands 2 left hand.  Paul lands a right.  Lara is showing signs of fatigue.  Paul is practically walking into the left hand.  Lara lands a left once more.  Close round.   

Parker: 10-9 Williams

Round 7:
Lara lands a straight right hand.  Lara gets on the inside and Williams throws his flurries.  Lara lands a straight left.  There's another.  Paul continues to take punishment in there from Lara's power hand.  This is really mind blowing.  If Paul Williams was in the ring with a stronger fighter, this fight would be over.  This may show that Williams needs a new trainer.  He needs a better gameplan to do something abou Lara's left hand.  Lara lands another left.  Paul staggers after recieving another left upstairs.  Lara is landing at will.  He's winning this round easily.

Parker: 10-9 Lara

Round 8:
Leaderman has Lara up by three rounds.  Lara lands another left hand.  Max Kellerman discusses the danger of the fight for Paul Williams now.  He's getting hit with left hands through eight rounds now and these are the kinds of fights that take a tole on the health of fighters.  There's another left hand.  Lara lands a right hook to mix it up.  Lara lands a right before Paul throws a flurry.  Lara gets a right hook through the gloves of Williams.  Williams misses with a left.  Lara drops his gloves below his waist.  He looks like Martinez in there.  

Parker: 10-9 Lara

Round 9:
Willams misses with a right hook.  Lara lands a nice right hook as Williams is coming in.  Williams throws a flurry, but Lara lands a left and the crowd gets up.  Paul finally blocks a left.  Lara lands a right hand then another left.  Paul keeps the punches coming but is eating the bigger punches.  Lara buckles Williams with another overhand left.

Parker: 10-9 Lara

Round 10:
Paul is still bouncing on his toes, but he needs to do something about the left.  Paul comes forward and eats a right hand left.  Lara snaps Williams head with a straight right.  Paul's slappy punches aren't winning these rounds.  Wililams throws a flurry to the body.  Williams is bleeding from his mouth.  Lara misses with a left. Lara drops his hands.  Williams works the body.  Lara lands a right hand.  That was a closer round and could've gone to Williams.

Parker: 10-9 Lara

Round 11:
Williams trainer tells him he needs a KO to win.  Lara lands an overhand left.  Lara lands two more left hands.  Roy Jones Jr. says that this fight is taking years off of his life.  Lara lands a left and a right.  He's landing at will.  Lara sneaks in a straight left through Paul's gloves.  Paul takes another big punch and Williams is wobbly.  Roy wants the fight stopped.  Paul gets wobbled again by a Lara left.  His face is a bloody mess.  Lara lands a right hand.  Paul stays busy to end the round but at what cost.

Parker: 10-9 Lara

Round 12:
Paul says he feels good in his corner.  Lara is going for the KO.  Paul has no answer.  Lara lands a right hook.  Williams lands a flurry to the body.  Lara lands a right hand.  The crowd starts to chant for Williams.  Lara lands another huge left hand.  Lara lands another.  Paul keeps the punches coming, but Lara keeps landing the left.  The bell rings and Paul looks defeated.

Parker: 117-111 Lara

The judges score the bout 114-114, 115-114 and 116-114 both for the winner by majority decision Paul "The Punisher" Williams.
 

Paul says he believes he won the fight.  Williams says he wants Martinez again before he retires.  

Lara says he doesn't know what the judges saw, but they thought they won the fight.  He says he wants a rematch to show the world he can officially beat Williams.
