At BAMMA 7, Paul Daley misses weight, had the fight moved to a catchweight and ultimately walked out the cage the winner. If the scenario sounds vaguely familiar you are not going crazy, it has happen before. Daley (28-11-2) has in fact done this on four separate occasions now and with today win has now improved to 4-0 at a catchweight.
It all started at UFC 108 when Daley missed weight for his bout with Dustin Hazelett. The 172 pound catchweight bout didn’t last long though as Daley knocked out “McLovin” at 2:24 of the first round.
After his release from the UFC, Daley missed weight again at Shark Fights 13 when he faced Jorge Masvidal. Daley took a unanimous decision win over the now Strikeforce fighter in what ended up being a 171.75 pound catchweight bout.
In Daley’s BAMMA debut at BAMMA 5 he was schedule to fight for the welterweight championship against Yuya Shirai. After missing weight their bout was made a non-title bout and Daley went on to knockout his opponent at 1:46 on the opening round. Note: Daley weighed in at 171 pounds which was one pound over for a championship bout. The bout was still considered a welterweight bout though, just made a non-title bout.
Daley came into his bout against Jordan Radev five pounds over the welterweight non-title fight limit of 171 pounds. It was his second fight under the BAMMA banner and also the second time he missed weight. Daley came out strong, throwing everything he had at Radev but the Bulgarian would not go down. Daley continued to punish his opponent in round two but “Semtex” was beginning to show signs of fatigue. The final round was the closest of the three as Daley was clearly gassed and Radev had the brawling on his back for most of the round. The fight would land in the judges’ hands and Daley came away with a unanimous decision victory (30-27, 29-28, 29-28).
So should we be crowning Daley the Catchweight Champion?
