The New Jersey canine that was crowned world’s ugliest dog in 2007 has died, according to owner Karen Quigley.
“He made people smile, he made them laugh and feel good,” Quigley said. “He will truly be missed.”
Quigley told reporters that the Chinese crested Chihuahua mix died on Thanksgiving morning, after dealing with some health issues in recent months. Q
The dog, Elwood, was nearly euthanized in 2005, after his breeder decided he was too ugly to sell. Instead, Quigley rescued him.
Since then, Elwood won the crown for the ugliest dog at Sonoma-Marin Country Fair in California, and was often referred to as Yoda or E.T. by fans for his resemblance to the characters.
After winning the title, Elwood garnered an online fan base and appeared in over 200 events to raise money for nonprofit animal organizations and rescue groups.
In memory of her dog, Quigley wrote “Everyone Loves Elwood”, a children’s book with a message that it’s OK to be different.
