A British schoolboy received almost £3,000 in a suit filed by his family over a splinter to his backside.
The student at Winterbourne Junior Boys’ School in Thornton Heath, south London, received a settlement of £2,760, or about $4,600.
The incident occurred four years ago, when the boy was seven. He sat down on a wooden bench and got a splinter, a “small injury” that will result in a scar, his family claimed. Croydon council, which paid the damages, hotly contested the family’s claims.
Another student’s mom told the Daily Star that the family was the laughing stock of the school parents.
"All of the mums have been laughing about it. It is such a joke,” she said. “How can they say it is the school’s fault and sue them because he got a splinter on his bum?”
Another parent, a single father, agreed, calling the settlement an example of the country’s “compensation culture gone mad.”
“If my son got a splinter in his backside I would just laugh it off and get the tweezers,” he said.
Other critics say the pay-out represents a huge waste of taypayer money, according to the Daily Mail.
“This is a complete waste of taxpayers' money and yet another story which highlights the ridiculous compensation culture that exists in our schools,” said Dia Chakravarty, political director at the TaxPayers' Alliance.
The school is no longer under the control of the local Croydon council. It issued no comment to press about the pay-out.
