Alanna Demella, of Medford, Massachusetts, was killed in a freak accident on Sunday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, when a car lost control and crashed into a hotel cabana that she and her husband, Michael, were staying in (pictures below).
To make matters worse, Alanna, 26, was pregnant and died in front of her husband.
Fort Lauderdale police said the driver, Rosa Rivera Kim, of Plantation, Florida, "lost control of her vehicle" and crashed her four-door Audi sedan into the cabana at the Riverside Hotel at 1:30 p.m. "for unknown reasons."
Witnesses said the couple had been lying by the pool when Alanna got up to use the restroom inside the cabana. Moments later, the car crashed into the two-story cabana.
Alanna's husband, Michael, was treated at Broward General Hospital for minor injuries and released, hospital officials said. He was also inside the cabana when the car hit.
Witness Joanne Gordon said: "They were going home to Boston. That's what he [Michael Demella] kept saying: 'We were on our way home, we were on our way home, why, why has this happened?'"
Police said the driver of the car, Rosa Rivera Kim, was also hospitalized for minor injuries and listed in stable condition. It was unclear whether she would be facing any charges.
Alanna was a third-grade teaching assistant at the Peirce School in Arlington, Massachusetts. The school principal Karen Hartley sent an email to teachers and staff on Monday: "We are devastated and heartbroken by the news."
