A 15-year-old Muslim boy was reportedly killed by a man driving an SUV outside a mosque in Kansas City, Missouri, on Thursday night.
The unidentified boy's legs were almost completely severed. He was rushed to a local hospital, but died because of an enormous loss of blood.
Another person was injured and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The teen was getting into a car outside the Somali Center when the unidentified man allegedly drove into him on purpose, police claim (video below).
“It became pretty clear that this was not an accidental crash,” Kansas City Police Sgt. Bill Mahoney told Fox 4 KC. "There is a considerable amount of evidence that leads us to believe it was intentional."
"[The driver] tried to leave the scene but couldn’t get anywhere in the vehicle," added Sgt. Mahoney. "He bailed out of it, started running eastbound and was apprehended by officers."
Officers say they found a machete and other weapons in the 30-year-old man's SUV.
Witnesses claimed the man, who is from Somalia, had threatened Muslims for months on Facebook. Local Muslims say he pointed a gun at them because of their religion.
“Our family is very destroyed at what happened," Khadra Dirir, the victim’s aunt, told Fox 4 KC. "He’s a sweet, loving kid. He doesn’t deserve this. I’m pretty sure it’s a hate crime from things I’ve been hearing. I hope that someone brings him to justice.”
The Guardian reports that FBI spokeswoman Bridget Patton said the feds “also have opened this matter as a federal civil rights investigation as a potential hate crimes violation."
