Top FBI Lawyer Allegedly Under Investigation For Leaks

| by Jordan Smith

A top lawyer is reportedly under investigation by the Justice Department for leaking intelligence information to the media.

Based on comments from three anonymous sources, Circa reported that James Baker is a top suspect in the probe into alleged leaks.

One source refused to provide details about what had been found, but confirmed the inquiry was part of "stepped-up efforts on leak investigations," according to Circa.

The FBI refused to comment on the allegations.

"The Bureau is scouring for leakers and there's been a lot of investigations," another source said.

Baker was appointed to the FBI general council by the Bureau's former director James Comey in 2014. Reports suggested Baker was giving Comey legal advice following the latter's February 2017 White House meeting with President Donald Trump.

The report emerged as Attorney General Jeff Sessions vowed to clamp down on leakers and promised an announcement on the matter soon.

"I have not been happy with the past prosecutions and investigations of criminal leaks," said Sessions, according to The Hill.

Sessions made the comments during an appearance on Fox News.

"We've already taken a number of steps ... We'll have a press conference next week about it, but we already have multiples, numbers of prosecutions compared to last year at this time," he added.

During the first weeks of his presidency, Trump complained about the number of leakers providing intelligence to the media. Sessions agrees with him, and stated on Fox, "People need to go to jail."

"We're stepping up those cases," Sessions added on DOJ efforts to prosecute. "It cannot continue."

Sessions' statements came shortly after Trump issued a call July 25 for more to be done to tackle leakers.

"I want the attorney general to be much tougher on the leaks from intelligence agencies," said Trump, according to CNN. "These are intelligence agencies. We cannot have that happen."

The focus has shifted over recent days from intelligence leaks to alleged leaks from within the White House. Anthony Scaramucci, Trump's communications chief, threatened White House staffers following the release of his financial declaration form.

"What I want to do is I want to f***ing kill all the leakers and I want to get the president's agenda on track so we can succeed for the American people," Scaramucci said, according to The Hill.

According to the reporter who broke the story about Scaramucci's financial declaration, the form is publicly available from the Export-Import Bank.
