The parents of a 6-month-old baby are being charged for the child's death in Laurens, South Carolina.
Law enforcement officials arrested father Joseph Galloway, 22, on suspicion that he was abusing his son, Mason Madden. Galloway was initially charged with abuse to inflict great bodily harm to a child, but the charge was upgraded to homicide by child abuse, according to Fox Carolina.
Authorities also arrested the child’s mother, Kayla Madden, 23, for unlawful conduct towards a child.
The arrests were made on July 14, and the baby was pronounced dead on July 15 at 2:02 p.m.
The incident reportedly began when Galloway called officials reporting that the baby was not breathing. Emergency medical services were soon on the scene and discovered the child in cardiac arrest. He was admitted to the hospital and placed on life support.
Madden was reportedly not in the home at the time of the incident.
“The child suffered from brain injuries that are not consistent with a fall,” said Sgt. Barton Holmes of the Laurens County Sheriff's Office. “They’re more consistent with squeezing the child or shaking the child.”
Galloway reportedly confessed to abusing the boy, Holmes said.
Galloway was denied bail. Galloway and Madden had separate bail hearings set for July 16.
