A number of social media users are accusing Taco Bell of promoting “rape culture” with their sauce packets. One sauce packet reads, "You asked for it," while another says, "You know you want me."
The latest complaints do not appear to be new, according to Pundit Press.
“A recent packet with the saying 'Why say no when you can say yes?' has not won over our favor,” a petition launched over a year ago aimed at stopping the messages on sauce packets read. “Regardless of the fact that this message is implied towards eating another Taco Bell product, not recognizing the overall importance of consent invalidates an individual's right to say no to any situation or person.”
The petition urged “Taco Bell to please halt continuation of creating and distributing hot sauce packet messages that contribute to ‘rape culture’ in order to prevent triggering survivors of violence where this phrased may have been used and to prevent youth to subconsciously develop this mindset that someone else has the right to control their personal choices.”
That petition secured only 19 signatures.
The latest uproar over Taco Bell comes just weeks after Bud Light was compelled to remove a slogan on a bottle after it provoked similar protests.
The slogan stated, “The perfect beer for removing 'no' from your vocabulary for the night.”
It was part of its Up For Whatever campaign.
“The Bud Light Up for Whatever campaign, now in its second year, has inspired millions of consumers to engage with our brand in a positive and light-hearted way,” the company said in a statement announcing the withdrawal of the slogan. “In this spirit, we created more than 140 different scroll messages intended to encourage spontaneous fun. It's clear that this message missed the mark, and we regret it. We would never condone disrespectful or irresponsible behavior.”
It remains to be seen whether the current criticism of Taco Bell's "You Asked For It" hot sauce slogan reaches a similar level.
