Sears Pulls 'Fifty Shades of Grey' Inspired Bondage Wear From Website

| by Emily Smith

Sears listed a considerable number of provocative bondage items on its website inspired by the “Fifty Shades of Grey” craze, though recently it seems to have removed many of the items from its online store.

A search on Sears’ website revealed the line from Elegant Moments, one of the department store’s third party lingerie vendors, that featured an “adjustable leather harness” and a “leather bra and g-string set”.

While the merchandise pictures are still on the website, some items have been entirely removed from the website.

"We perform routine content audits to remove items or product images that do not meet our Marketplace guidelines,” a Sears spokesperson said.

While Sears may have removed some items for allegedly not meeting guidelines, The Consumerist suggested that competition may have led to the decision. Amazon often features the same items at cheaper prices.

The company reported quarterly losses in May, and has reported considerable losses and plummeting stocks since Kmart acquired it.

Sears has not been the only business to indulge consumers’ interest in Fifty Shades-inspired items.

Icing, a jewelry store owned by Claire’s, sold handcuff bracelets and t-shirts referencing quotes from the novel. Some hotels have also begun offering “Fifty Shades” packages, including a bottle of Christian Grey’s favorite champagne and a “Charlie Tango” private helicopter ride.
