Comedian Ricky Gervais’ edgy jokes while hosting the Golden Globes in 2010, 2011 and 2012, received mixed reviews, but outright controversy erupted when he made a crack about Caitlyn Jenner at the 2016 awards ceremony on Jan. 10 (video below).
Although it seemed no one was safe from Gervais’ barbs, he told the audience he’d changed since his previous appearances at the Golden Globes. “Not as much as Bruce Jenner, obviously. Now Caitlyn Jenner, of course,” he said, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“What a year she's had. She became a role model for trans people everywhere, showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes. She didn't do a lot for women drivers, but you can't have everything, can you?”
Gervais was referring to Jenner’s involvement in a 2015 car accident in Malibu, California, which left one woman dead. Jenner was not charged in the incident, People magazine reported.
Gervais doesn’t seem to have to care much about causing a stir. “Can't wait for people to start reporting that I offended some people at The Golden Globes. Of course I f------ did,” he tweeted.
