Residents of Walland, Ontario, were mystified when big pink heart posters kept popping up all over town.
Local newspaper reporter Maryanne Firth had followed the story since late April, tweeting under the hashtag #WellandHearts.
Suddenly new posters were popping up that indicated something special was going to happen Sunday in Chippawa Park.
Firth showed up with her notepad and a camera only to find a man in a tent wearing a suit and a pink box over his head. Dozens of onlookers watched as the man took off the box and got down on one knee.
Her boyfriend of eight years, Ryan St. Denis said he knew the clues would lead her to him. He asked her to marry him and she said yes.
"Sure is hard to cover a story when it turns out the news is you," Firth wrote in Canoe. "It all boils down to the fact that Ryan St. Denis knows me better than I know myself. ... He knew my nose for news would drive me to unearth the secret."
“I like a good mystery, and I like it even more when I can solve it before anyone else,” she said. “But for once, I'm glad the secret was kept.”
