Joshua Fought was mauled by a police dog on July 18 while in a park in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania (video below).
A bystander filmed the incident, which drew attention from other park goers who also appeared to film the dog attack. Facebook user Rolando Serra posted his video on July 18 with a caption: "S*** that goes down at the sq all this cause he wouldn't drop his beer."
Fought wrote about the incident on July 21 on his Facebook page:
I was relaxing in the WB square Park, when an officer approached my vicinty (ten feet from me) with the K9 on a leash. After the dog lunged at my 68 year old female friend, I said "don't let that dog lunge at my girl friend."
He then released the dog on me. I had never even left the spot I was sitting in, let alone "resist arrest." The K9 preceded to thrash my lower back while on my side, for what felt like 5 minutes straight, maybe more or less. The only thing I remember during the attack (besides the pain) ,is towards the end, the officer ordering me "get on your stomach," which I physically couldn't do.
Finally the dog was removed some how, and I was put into hand cuffs. The EMTs took me on a stretcher to WB general hospital, where I was notified I would need surgery. The officers relaesed my cuff after a few hours, and told me hospital security would watch me. They did surgery by 10 pm, sewing in some type of suter. I was released from the hospital 2 days later, was told I would need another surgery in 10 days, and went to Mom's house in Berwick.
I have gotten no charges thus far. Hope to update soon with pictures and/or video. Have called a few lawyers and the ACLU, but no response yet. Heard next day from my 68 year old female friend, it was the dog's first day on the job.
The Wilkes-Barre City Police Department noted the incident on its Facebook page on July 22: "Officer observed Fought on Public Square consuming beer. When asked for identification, Fought became disorderly. As the officer attempted to take Fought into custody he began to resist arrest and was refusing to follow the officer’s commands. Charges were filed accordingly."
Fought wrote on his Facebook page on July 22: "The cop never came near me, so couldn't call me drunk, but I wake up disorderly. He was at least ten feet away. Can't wait to see hospital picks. Was told this looked more like a shark or alligator bite. Felt like it. Imma take home pics soon."
In another posting on July 22, Fought wrote: "Stuck at Mom's for a while recovering. Chillin on back porch listening to music. Anyone wanna come thru hit me up. Bring a laptop and a microphone."
