Passengers on a CityJet flight flying from London to Florence were terrified Thursday when they saw that a large piece of one wing was hanging off the side of the plane.
The British Aerospace Avro RJ85 was one in 23 in the fleet of the Ireland-based regional airline. It had been in the air for only a few moments when its 61 passengers heard a loud bang.
When passengers looked at the wing, they saw that part of it was hanging off the plane. Telegraph reporter Cole Moreton, who happened to be on the flight, immediately began recording the terrifying sight.
“A six-foot plus section of the left wing that looked like it suddenly came loose and hung down, flapping in the jet stream,” Moreton said. “It seemed hydraulic pistons had snapped as they were flapping too.”
Passengers informed the cabin staff, who informed the captain. After conversing with the CityJet maintenance staff via radio, the captain decided to turn the plane around and return to London City Airport.
The fearless passengers boarded another aircraft two hours later and made their flight to Florence safely.
