The 39-year-old father of Michigan’s first and only surviving sextuplets died Wednesday after a sudden heart attack, his family says.
Ben Van Houten was playing with his children on a new trampoline he had just set up in the backyard when he suffered a fatal heart attack Wednesday night, his father-in-law Calvin Reimink told MLive.
“He was always spending time with the kids,” Reimink said.
He said Van Houten was the bed son-in-law a man could ask for.
"Just to know Ben for even one day would be a blessing,” he said.
Van Houten’s father only lived to age 40 – he died of a heart attack as well.
The family’s church and other in the community are helping Van Houten’s wife, Amy, care for their seven children.
Reimink says he worries about her and the kids.
The six children, born in January 2004, were the state’s first surviving group of sextuplets. Two are diagnosed with cerebral palsy and require special care.
The couple also has a seventh child, a 7-year-old girl.
