Meryl Streep Sparks Controversy With Obama Handbag

| by David Bonner

Meryl Streep is drawing online attention for her latest show of support for former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle.

On July 12, the celebrated actress was photographed carrying a custom handbag emblazoned with an image of the Obamas together, reports EOnline.

The photo was taken on the set of "The Papers," her upcoming Steven Spielberg film.

When president in 2014, Obama presented Streep with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor.

"I love Meryl Streep," he declared during the ceremony. "Her husband knows I love her. Michelle knows I love her. There's nothing they can do about it," he joked.

Streep's open affinity for the Obamas stands in stark contrast to the public criticism she has recently levied against current President Donald Trump.

Her Jan. 8 speech at the Golden Globe Awards heaped scorn on Trump's controversial travel ban, which suspended worldwide refugee entry into the U.S. and barred visitors from seven Muslim-majority nations for up to 90 days.

Hollywood, Streep noted at the time, "is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. And if we kick them all out you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts."

She went on to say: "Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. And when the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.

In response, Trump took to Twitter, denouncing Streep as "one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood," and a "Hillary flunky who lost big."

That didn't stop Streep from attacking the president again in a fiery speech delivered Feb. 11 at a Human Rights Campaign event, where she received the National Ally for Equality Award, The New York Times reports.

In her comments, Streep implied that her anti-Trump speech from the Golden Globes just one month prior had generated an enormous backlash, then followed up with several vague references to, among other things, Nazis, the Daily Mail noted.

"It's terrifying to put the target on your forehead and it sets you up for all sorts of attacks and armies of Brownshirts and bots and worse, and the only way you can do it is if you feel you have to," she said.

"'Evil prospers when good men do nothing," she continued. "We shouldn't be surprised that fundamentalists, of all stripes, everywhere, are exercised and fuming."

Streep proclaimed that Trump had demonstrated "how the authority of the executive, in the hands of a self-dealer, can be wielded against the people, and the Constitution and the Bill of Rights... the whip of the executive can, through a Twitter feed, lash and intimidate, punish and humiliate, delegitimize the press and all of the imagined enemies with spasmodic regularity and easily provoked predictability."

Many Trump supporters visiting EOnline offered less than stellar reviews of her Obama handbag.

"This woman is a very sick old bag of wind, she is not important to the American people, we know she is a TRAITOR!!" a commenter wrote. One reader suggested that "she needs to retire," while another's diagnosis stated that "She's ready for the mental institution."
