A Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, man has been convicted of brutally raping an 8-year-old girl.
In just 40 minutes, a jury found 53-year-old Jonathan R. Tyrrell guilty on charges of rape of a child, indecent assault of someone under 13, unlawful contact with a minor and corruption of a minor on July 8, Penn Live reports.
Tyrrell raped the girl in April 2014. The attack was so brutal it caused her to bleed from her genitals and require surgery.
DNA evidence from the girl’s genitals tied Tyrrell to the rape.
The girl, now 11, testified in court against him.
While awaiting trial in December 2014, Tyrrell filed a lawsuit against Dauphin County Prison for pain and suffering after he fell, while asleep, from his top bunk bed, WPMT reported.
The civil rights complaint alleged Tyrell fell four to five feet from his top bunk onto the cement floor. He claimed to still suffer from shoulder and neck pain and constant headaches from injuries sustained in the fall.
He asked the court to grant him nominal bail so he could return to work to support his family and receive medical care and follow-up medical care, if necessary.
This is Tyrrell’s second conviction for a sex crime. He served 16 years in prison after being convicted of raping a woman in New York in 1983, according to Penn Live.
He faces at least 25 years in prison for the charges associated with his rape of the 8-year-old girl in 2014. He will be sentenced in October.
