Man Rams Car Into Ex-Girlfriend's Apartment (Video)

| by David Bonner

A Florida man died after ramming his propane-filled car into his ex-girlfriend's apartment on July 4 (video below).

Carl Philbert, 31, was upset with his ex-girlfriend so he loaded up his white four-door sedan with four propane tanks and smashed through the front windows of her ground-floor apartment in Fort Pierce, Florida, reports the Daily Mail.

The resulting explosion that was caught on video by a neighbor.

Philbert died at the scene, but five adults and one toddler managed to escape through a back door. Eileen Cuevas, 26, the daughter of Philbert's ex-girlfriend, explained how the events unfolded.

Her mother was in the front room of the apartment when she saw Philbert's car heading toward them. After he crashed into her living room, she grabbed her 3-year-old son, her mother, and her grandmother, and they fled through the back door. Just as they exited, the building and car both caught fire.

Despite his attempt to kill her mother and everybody else in the apartment, Cuevas told local newspaper TC Palm that she "wanted people to help him because I saw his body burning," as quoted by the Daily Mail.

"You never want to see a thing like that," she added. "I saw his body, everything on fire."

She did not know Philbert's motive for the attack. "It's very personal," she said. "It's still weird talking about it. He was trying to get to my mom. It was meant for everybody that was in the house. I mean, the man had four or five propane tanks in the car. They were friends and it turned out really bad. This is very personal for our family, so it's kind of touchy."

Ed Cunningham, spokesman for the Fort Pierce Police Department, said officials believe Philbert and his ex-girlfriend got into an argument when he showed up at her apartment on the morning of July 4, reports WPTV.

"He intended to do damage," Cunningham said. "He raced his car into this apartment where five people were, intending to kill them, blow the place up, or create some kind of havoc."

Video of the explosion was taken by neighbor Kathy Toledo, who said she lives in an apartment next door.

All eight units in the apartment complex were damaged in the fire, displacing 13 adults and five children. The American Red Cross has been called in to help manage the situation, the Fire District announced.
