A mother in Lakeland, Fla., allegedly mailed her daughters, ages 7 and 9, a knife and told them to use it to murder their paternal grandparents.
31-year-old Leticia Silva recently lost custody of her daughters, when full custody was awarded to their grandparents, who live in Pitt County, N.C.
On Feb. 4 the grandmother told investigators she found a knife hidden under her granddaughter’s pillow.
The girls told authorities that Silva first sent them a switchblade pocketknife. Later at Christmastime she called the girls and told them to go to the kitchen, get a knife, and use it to kill their grandparents. The kitchen knife was the one later found under the pillow.
Silva turned herself in to police on Monday. She was charged with four counts of solicitation to commit murder and is being held on a $5 million bond.
Their grandparents do not believe the girls would have carried out an attack. A neighbor who spoke anonymously with WCTI 12 said, "They are the sweetest little girls and I don't think they'd hurt anybody." The neighbor added, "The grandparents are doing a wonderful job raising them."
"It's hard to say what a child is going to do," said Pitt County Det. Charles Mitchell. "The grandparents have told me that they spoke to the children and…neither one of them would carry it out."
Silva has prior assault and drug charges, WCTI 12 reported. Her family believes the grandparents are making up the entire incident, citing a long custody battle.
She is scheduled to make her next court appearance March 21.
