A Houston, Texas, mother filed a lawsuit against her young son’s day care center after a teacher reportedly encouraged the boy to fight with another child and then made a video of the fight.
Ashlee Minchew is accused of taking videos of two children fighting at Children’s Universe day care center in Lake Conroe, Texas, in 2014. The teacher claimed told ABC 7 Chicago Eyewitness News she did not film it, and rather was the one who leaked it out of anger for being fired over a separate incident.
"And I wish I could just run to parents and be like, 'Look, it wasn't me filming! I'm just the one who chose to leak it,'” Minchew, who now works as a nanny, said. “I'm the whistleblower."
Although the lawsuit doesn’t specifically name Minchew or any other staff members, she was a suspect in the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office investigation into the video.
“It's just shocking that this could happen,” Attorney Greg Fibich, who represents the mother of the child fighting in the video, said. “She did a lot of research about this facility and thought that her children were in safe hands."
Children’s Universe owner Brooke Leax released a statement responding to the lawsuit.
“At the present time, we have not been made aware of any lawsuit. The incident in question occurred close to a year ago and was first reported to the authorities by myself and our director,” Leax’s statement read.
“We cooperated 100 percent in the investigation, which was closed by the police and Texas Department of Family and Protective Services several weeks later. The employee in question had been terminated for unrelated reasons prior to the initial report."
