An Oklahoma man is lucky to be alive after being saved from drowning by his three sons.
Michael Buckingham, 37, was spending an afternoon in his neighbor’s pool on July 26 when a child jumped in and landed on top of him, KFOR reported.
“As soon as it hit me, it paralyzed my entire body, my eyes were functioning, but nothing else was working,” Buckingham told the news station (video below).
The father of four sank to the deep end of the pool. Six to 8 minutes passed before anyone realized something was wrong.
“He wouldn’t just go under water and put his head on the floor,” Buckingham’s son, Braden, said. “Unless he was trying to do a breathing thing. He wouldn’t scare us that he was dying.”
Braden and his brother, Bryson, each grabbed a hand and pulled their father out onto the sun deck. Their little brother, Beckett, got a raft.
“We just tried to get help,” Braden said.
Buckingham spent several days in intensive care. Family friends launched a Facebook page called “Prayers for Buck," and Buckingham started to recover.
EMSA medics said Buckingham was one more gulp of water away from dying.
“There is power in prayer,” Buckingham said. “Now, it’s 105, 110 -thousand people who have prayed for me. It’s a miracle.”
Aside from a pinched nerve on his neck, Buckingham made a full recovery. He’s grateful to the paramedics who cared for him and his courageous boys, who he called “superheroes.” EMSA awarded the three boys “Everyday Hero” medals.
“I feel like the richest man on Earth, I do, and it has nothing to do with money,” Buckingham told News 9. “I feel like I've understood love now."
