Police in India are investigating the mysterious death of a paranormal investigator who made a living attempting to communicate with ghosts.
Gaurav Tiwari, 32, was rushed to the hospital after he was found unresponsive in the bathroom of his home on July 7. He had marks on his neck, and investigators have determined that the cause of death was asphyxia, according to the Daily Mail.
A scarf was reportedly found in the bathroom, leading investigators to suspect that Tiwari hanged himself with it, according to The Indian Express.
Others, however, are not convinced.
"There were welt marks on his neck, both on the inner and upper side," a source told The Indian Express. "The trachea was not ruptured, which normally happens when a person hangs himself."
Police are also considering the possibility that Tiwari accidentally asphyxiated himself during some kind of "experimentation."
Tiwari's family has a different theory.
"Gaurav told his wife a month ago that a negative force was pulling him towards it," Tiwari's father said, according to the Daily Mail. "He had said he was trying to control it but seemed unable to do so. My daughter-in-law ignored it thinking he was just depressed due to work overload and did not tell us about it."
Police also found a broken cell phone at Tiwari's house, indicating that there may have been an altercation between him and his wife.
The day before his death, Tiwari reportedly came home late after conducting a paranormal investigation, which led to a family argument.
"The same day, he allegedly had an argument with his mother, who did not approve of him going out so late at night. Tiwari had later called his father and said he is no longer a child," a source told The Indian Express.
Tiwari was a certified paranormal and UFO investigator, as well as a hypnotist, according to the Daily Mail. He founded the Indian Paranormal Society in 2009 after having a frightening experience while training to become a commercial pilot.
