Man Finds Hours-Old Baby Abandoned, Covered In Ants

| by Lauren Briggs

A Texas man was walking to work when he spotted something so shocking that he didn't believe his eyes at first: a newborn baby was lying in the bushes, covered in ants.

"I heard some crying and whining and crying, and I kept walking until I got closer to the noise, and then I looked at the ground and there was a baby down there," Albert Peterson told KHOU.

The mother, a 21-year-old old whose name has not yet been made public, has been taken into police custody and is undergoing medical and psychological evaluations, notes KTRK.

Peterson, who made the unpleasant discovery at around 5 a.m. on Aug. 10 in Houston, Texas, said that he initially thought the crying baby girl was a doll, according to KHOU.

"I looked down," Peterson told KTRK. "I said, 'Oh, man, there is a baby right here.' The baby was brand new. … I picked the baby up, and the baby had mucus and blood and all kinds of stuff all over her body."

And even worse, he said he saw "ants and stuff all over" the newborn's body. He picked her up and brought him to his apartment, where he cleaned her up, wrapped her in a blanket and had his wife call police.

"She had the mucus and the blood and umbilical cord and everything," he told KHOU. "That's just sad, for a human being to do another human being like that."

The little girl is healthy and will be handed over to Child Protective Services after an observational stay in the hospital, notes KTRK.

As far as the mom goes? She wasn't too hard to track down.

"She walked all the way around that corner bleeding," Peterson said, pointing in the direction. "You see her footprints on the ground."

She was found in her apartment with a man, though deputies do not know if he is the father, reports KHOU.

The man was also taken into custody, according to KTRK

"Without this neighbor, we could be looking at ... a whole different scene," said Deputy Thomas Gilliland. "It would be more of a homicide."

CPS is looking to place the girl with a relative. If this doesn't happen, she will be put up for adoption.

"That life is not something you can take for granted, it's making me tear up right now, that is really sick," neighbor Calvin Johnson, who has two newborn babies, told KHOU.
