Football player Ryan Tannehill’s model wife left a semi-automatic rifle in the back of a rental car, where it was discovered by the people who rented the car after.
According to the Broward’s Sheriff’s Office Lauren Tannehill rented a Nissan Rouge from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport E-Z Rent-A-Car on Jan. 4. She then decided to go with another car—but forgot about the LMT AR-15 that she’d left it its case in the back seat.
Judith Fleissig, who was visiting with her daughter from Rochester, N.Y., picked up the car a few hours later. But they didn’t see notice the gun until a few days later, since the SUV’s seats were folded down and the bag was not visible. When they raised the seats to make room for friends, they found the surprise.
“We got out of the car, we were kind of freaked out,” Judith Fleissig told the Sun-Sentinel. “I didn’t want to touch it.”
Fleissig said neither she nor her daughter wanted to touch the weapon.
“I took a picture, zipped it back up and went to the police station. They came out and took it,” Fleissig said.
The Tannehills reportedly called E-Z Rent-A-Car to tell them they had forgotten something, but would not specify what it was.
Though leaving the rifle was definitely a bizarre mistake, the police said the couple didn’t do anything against the law.
“Though dangerous if it would have landed in the wrong hands, it’s not criminal,” Broward sheriff's spokeswoman Keyla Concepción said. “They simply forgot it.”
According to the Sun-Sentinel, the Tannehills frequently post on Twitter about guns, as the Dolphins quarterback and Texas native is a hunting fan. The gun, a civilian version of the military M-16, belonged to Ryan.
The Tannehills have not commented on the incident, short of a Dolphins spokesperson saying the couple considered it a “personal matter."
