John Crawford, 22, was talking to the mother of his children while shopping at Wal-Mart when police reportedly shot him dead.
Crawford was reportedly holding an air rifle he had picked up, possibly for one of his two children. The incident occurred in Beavercreek, Ohio, just outside of Dayton.
LeeCee Johnson, the woman who claims to be the mother of Crawford's two children, does not seem to believe the police acted appropriately.
Johnson told the Dayton Daily News, "We was just talking. He said he was at the video games playing videos and he went over there by the toy section where the toy guns were. And the next thing I know, he said 'It’s not real,' and the police start shooting and they said 'Get on the ground,' but he was already on the ground because they had shot him."
She further recalled the horrific scene, telling reporters, "I could hear him just crying and screaming. I feel like they shot him down like he was not even human."
The Daily Mail reports, "Beavercreek Police and Ohio Attorney General’s Office have yet to respond to the claims but have insisted officers at the scene acted appropriately."
The scene escalated due to a 911 call made by an unnamed person who was present at the store when Crawford made the fatal mistake of picking up an air rifle and allegedly pointing it at people.
The witness told a 911 dispatcher, "There is a gentleman walking around with a gun in the store. ... He's, like, pointing it at people."
Following this phone call, Sgt. David Darkow and Officer Sean Williams reportedly showed up on the scene and gunned down John Crawford while panicked shoppers evacuated the Wal-Mart.
During the evacuation, another customer died of an unspecified "medical condition." She has been identified as Angela Williams, 37, of Fairborn, Ohio.
