A New Orleans mother has been charged with second-degree murder after her daughter died on Sunday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Laderika Smith, 28, admitted that she locked her daughter inside a bedroom alone at their home before she went to the store. When Smith returned, her daughter was on the floor with a gunshot wound to the head.
According to police spokesman, Hilal Williams, the young girl, whose name has not been released, was taken off life support and died late Sunday afternoon.
Initial reports indicate that the child accidentally shot herself after finding a .38-caliber revolver that Smith had insider the home. Police have recovered the gun.
Smith was booked for cruelty to a juvenile initially, but the charges were made more severe after the child’s death, Nola.com reported.
Family members say the gun belongs to friend and that is was being stored on the top shelf of a closet.
"You have to think first if you got kids in the house; anything can happen," said Smith's cousin, Veranda Williams. "Kids do climb and things do happen."
