A Joe’s Crab Shack in Colorado Springs, Colorado, is under investigation after a waiter allegedly served alcoholic drinks to some children between the ages of two and eight.
Six cousins, ranging in age from two to eight years old, were at the Joe’s Crab Shack restaurant with their family when they were served the cocktails. The restaurant claims that the children all ordered Shark Nibbles, which is a non-alcoholic drink for children, off the kid’s menu, but the bartender made a mistake and thought the order was for Snake Bites, an adult version. By the time the children were all done with their drinks, the waitress came running over to tell them that they had made a huge mistake.
The adult beverage in question allegedly contains Bacardi Limon Rum, Skyy Vodka, blue curacao, and what the menu describes as “a dangerous dose of grenadine.”
“One of my aunt's favorite places to eat is Joe's when she comes into town,” Trista Montoya told KKTV of the family’s visit on Wednesday. “The kids were asking for a "Shark Nibble" ... it's a kids drink off the menu. Then the managers actually came back with the tray of drinks and then let us know that they had accidentally poured alcohol into our kids' beverages. [The manager] said it was 'mislabeled' and we were a little bit concerned with that kind of response. You order these drinks, and you order them off the kids menu with the intent that you're providing your child with something safe and that the restaurant is doing their job.”
The family called paramedics when the children began to feel ill, but they were eventually all cleared to go home.
“I hope that other parents are cognizant of that and take that into consideration when they are ordering these drinks...what is in each and every one of these drinks,” said Montoya.
Joe’s Crab Shack’s corporate office said in a statement to KKTV: “Joe’s Crab Shack is aware of this incident at the Colorado Springs Location, and we are investigating this matter internally. We do not condone underage service of any kind. Our guests can rest assured that our processes are continuously examined so that incidents like this are avoided. “
The incident is currently under investigation by Colorado Springs police.
