George Zimmerman rescued a couple and their children from an overturned car last Wednesday just yards from where Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin.
According to The Daily Mail, the Gerstle family was driving down the highway when Mark Gerstle drove onto the off-ramp and lost control of the family’s blue Ford Explorer. His wife, Dana and his 8-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son were inside the car as well.
Zimmerman did not witness the event, but was at the scene shortly after it occurred.
“We spoke with George on Friday and he made no mention of this at all,” a representative for Zimmerman’s lawyer said, adding that Zimmerman often gets involved in situations like these. “That’s very typical of George. “
Sanford Police Department Capt. Jim McAuliffe said Zimmerman was identified by one of the victims.
“George Zimmerman pulled me out,” Mark Gerstle said.
After Zimmerman gave an account of what had happened, he simply left.
Sheriff spokeswoman Kim Cannaday said the department was not going as far as calling Zimmerman a hero.
Zimmerman’s sudden appearance, which some are calling a publicity stunt despite his lawyers’ denials, was surprising considering he had been in hiding. He and his family had experienced a myriad of death threats after the news of his acquittal, which brought Americans onto the streets in protest.
