PA Gov. Tom Corbett Compares Same-Sex Marriage To Sibling Incest (Video)

Republican Gov. Tom Corbett, who is using taxpayer money to fight same-sex marriage in the state of Pennsylvania, told a Friday morning local news show that gay marriage is like sibling incest.

The Corbett administration is currently waging a legal battle against the issuing of same-sex marriage licenses in the state, after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Defense of Marriage Act.

In the absence of DOMA, a Montgomery County register of the wills, D. Bruce Hanes, started issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. When Corbett’s administration said those licenses were null and void, citing a state ban on gay marriage, same sex couples sued, calling the ban unconstitutional.

In August, Corbett’s legal team garnered criticism for comparing Hanes' actions to handing out marriage licenses to kids.

“Had the clerk issued marriage licenses to 12-year-olds in violation of state law, would anyone seriously contend that each 12-year-old … is entitled to a hearing on the validity of his ‘license’?” Corbett’s attorneys asked in a court filing.

A spokesman for Corbett said the comment was not meant to be critical of any group.

Friday morning on WHP-TV in Harrisburg, Corbett offered what he considered to be a more apt analogy.

"It was an inappropriate analogy, you know," Corbett said. "I think a much better analogy would have been brother and sister, don't you?"

The news anchor gasped and hestitated before responding, “I don’t know … I’m gonna leave the comments to you and your team.”

Corbett, who is an attorney himself, believes the challenge to the state’s same-sex marriage ban does not belong in federal court.

"The Supreme Court left it up to the states to determine under their laws as to what is and isn't a marriage," Corbett said. "The federal court shouldn't even be involved in this. But if they say they are, then they're going to make a determination whether the state has the right to determine that a marriage is only between a man and a woman and not between two individuals of the same sex."
