University of Missouri students let the Westboro Baptist Church know where they stand Saturday when the Arkansas church attempted to protest against NFL hopeful and openly gay defensive end Michael Sam.
In 30-degree weather, thousands of UM students wearing “Stand with Sam” pins formed a human chain around Mizzou Arena during a basketball game against Tennessee.
“Because Michael Sam stood up for Mizzou his entire career and we need to stand up for him,” said Michelle Carmichael, 51.
They blocked WBC protesters from view, turned their backs and sang the school alma mater until the group dispersed. WBC protesters were gone before tip off.
Inside the arena, Sam was given a standing ovation when he appeared on video boards during the game.
The university proudly tweeted the event under the hashtag #StandWithSam
WBC denounced Sam’s supporters on Twitter Sunday.
