The source of a sick tortoise’s illness became apparent after a Florida vet took an x-ray and discovered the animal had swallowed a turtle-shaped pendant.
Dr. Don Harris, veterinarian at the Avian and Exotic Animal Medical Center in Miami, said that the African spurred tortoise hadn’t pooped for a month and began acting sick over the weekend.
The 15-pound male, interestingly named Lola, may need surgery if the pendant doesn’t pass.
Although Lola’s owners said they didn’t recognize the pendant, Harris noted that tortoises graze like cattle and will often accidentally consume non-food objects. While eating grass, plants and other vegetation, tortoises often pick up rocks.
Lola is currently being held at the clinic under Harris’ watchful eye. She is being treated with laxatives in the hopes that the pendant, which is blocking her digestive tract, will pass.
