A 22-year-old mother is being charged with child abuse and possession of narcotics after she left her 1-month old baby in her car while she went to a bar.
Britney Jean Rohdy left the front window partially down in her Mercury Sable before entering Suite 306 Bar and Lounge in Ocala, Fla. The baby fortunately survived, but was sweating and had been sitting in the heat for at least 45 minutes.
Medical staff said the baby likely would not have survived had it been daytime.
The baby was spotted by a passerby at about 1 a.m. on Monday. The person called police, who arrived at 1:17 a.m.
Police located the mother in the bar, and she quickly said she had only been in the bar for 10 minutes trying to find someone. But the bar owner contradicted her and said she had been inside since 12:30 a.m.
Once the child was removed from the car, it was taken to the hospital as a precaution before being turned over to Rohdy's mother.
Police also found a pill bottle of oxycodone in the car, which was not prescribed to Rohdy.
She is in Marion County Jail and bail has been set at $10,000.
