A judge handed down a 30-year prison sentence to a Milwaukee man for what she described as “absolute torture” of his 10-month-old daughter.
The baby girl was hospitalized last fall. With burns covering 15 percent of her body, the injuries were so bad that she stopped moving entirely. There were burn patterns on her back consistent with a charcoal grill found in her parents’ kitchen. She also suffered scalding burns on her legs and inside her mouth as well as bites and bruises.
The infant also suffered severe brain injuries consistent with being violently shaken, thrown or slammed, reports The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Her father, 21-year-old Corey Burns, pleaded guilty to three felonies. He was sentenced for “cruelty and torture,” according to the medical report.
Burns made a brief statement prior to his sentencing from Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Rebecca Dallet.
“I apologize for my actions,” Burns said. “I take full responsibility for my actions. And that’s it, judge.”
“You took a child who was already severely burned over her legs, her lips, who has bite marks and all of these injuries to her body, who is no longer sitting up, who is not making eye contact … and is basically laying there,” Dallet said. “And you put her on a grill.”
The baby and her mother, Chazzidy White, 22, moved to Wisconsin from Texas in late October. Shortly afterward, White got a job and Burns became the main caretaker of the baby.
On Nov. 5, 2014, White called to check on her child. Burns told her to rush home, saying their daughter had been burned by bath water.
Investigators said that explanation was implausible. The baby was burned only on the front, as though she was dipped into the scalding liquid.
White later told police her daughter’s legs looked like she had been “skinned.”
White wanted to take the child to the doctor, but Burns talked her out of it. He said child welfare officials would get involved, according to court documents.
One week later, White noticed circles on her daughter’s neck, bruises on her chin and scratches on her face.
On Nov. 22, 2014, White saw more injuries, including a grate burn. Burns said the baby brushed against a metal heating vent, but the injuries resembled the markings of a charcoal grill in the kitchen.
Both Burns and White were arrested. White pleaded guilty to child neglect and failure to prevent child abuse. She was given two years in prison and five years of extended supervision, reports Inquisitr.
Burns' 30-year sentence came with some choice words from Dallet. Though she acknowledged that Burns had himself suffered horrific abuse as a child, she said it did not excuse his actions.
“This was torture, absolute torture of your daughter, and it went on for many, many days,” Dallet said. “I see a lot of child abuse cases in here. I see a lot of cases of burns. I have never seen anything like this.
