First son Eric Trump commented on a tweet from comedian Chelsea Handler during an appearance on "The Dr. Oz Show."
In March, Handler tweeted about Eric's wife Lara's pregnancy, writing, "Just what we need, another person with those jeans," according to Page Six. She then clarified, "Sorry about spelling mistake. I meant 'genes,' not 'jeans.' I'm a little stoned."
"Lara and I are excited to announce that we are adding a boy to #TeamTrump in September. It's been an amazing year. We are blessed!" tweeted Eric in March, according to Fox.
Eric told Dr. Oz about his response to Handler's comment, saying, "It's just sad, right?"
"Sad that society's gotten to the point where something as beautiful as this and life and babies and innocence ... really gets taken down like that because of politics," said President Donald Trump's son. "I mean, that’s how divided we’ve become as a nation ... It’s really, really sad. This is a very special thing and it should be celebrated. When someone spells genes incorrectly, you kind of have to turn your head and ignore it a little."
Eric said that he doesn't mind being a public figure himself, but it upsets him to see family members made fun of in the media.
"Where I find it harder is when I see my little brother, you know, Barron, or when I see Tiffany, who’s kind of just coming into her own," Eric said. "It’s a little bit tough when you see young children getting hit every single day by grown-ups."
"There's supposed to be an unwritten rule and, unfortunately, it's just not being followed," he said.
Eric and Lara appeared on Dr. Oz's show to talk about the dangers of puppy mills.
In February, the Trump administration reportedly removed the USDA's animal welfare data from its website, including a page that listed breeding operations that have violated laws.
Eric's brother, Donald Trump Jr., posted a response to Handler on Facebook, in which he called her tweet "sick."
"The liberal elite's real hatred is hopefully starting to be apparent to mainstream America. (both right and left)," wrote Donald Trump Jr. "Their whole 'party of tolerance' nonsense only applies if you fully buy into their dogma, and when you don't their true colors shine."
"Attacking the announcement of someone's first pregnancy would seem below the belt to most, but sadly that's no longer the case," he added. "As to the 'hoping it's a girl' comment, I wonder if she knows that said 'jeans' (aka genes) are passed from the same people whether it's a girl or a boy??? Based on what I've seen ... probably not. So much for the party of science. #JEANous."
