Bob’s Classic Kicks, a shoe store in Dedtroit, Michigan, is offering a free pair of black leather Nikes to every Detroit student who shows up on 'Student Count Day.'
Student Count Day, Oct. 3, is the day when students are counted and the numbers used for per-pupil funding from the state and federal government, reports CBS Detroit.
The more students there are in class, the more money schools have all year.
Christian Dorsey, a manager at Bob’s Classic Kicks, told CBS Detroit: “Well, first off, we decided since we’ve been in the community for eight years, we wanted to give back to the community, so why not do what we do best, which is shoes. We know this is a great cause for the community, it’s something that needs to be done.”
The school district will hand out shoe vouchers to every child in every grade, which could be between 14,000 to 17,000 pairs of shoes.
Detroit schools are notorious for bad test scores, poorly run finances, violence and low student attendance.
