The Nation of Islam’s leader, Rev. Louis Farrakhan, is claiming that Ebola was designed by white scientists with the intention of killing off blacks.
Fox News reports that Farrakhan, 81, makes the claim in the Nation of Islam’s newspaper, The Final Call. He also made the same claim on his Twitter page, which has 308,000 followers.
Included in his outrageous accusations is the notion that the disease was invented in a laboratory as a means of population control, and that the virus is lethal only to black people.
“There is a weapon that can be put in a room where there are black and white people, and it will kill only the black and spare the white, because it is a genotype weapon that is designed for your genes, for your race, for your kind,” Farrakhan wrote.
Farrakhan’s claims about Ebola, while far-fetched, do not mark the first time the leader has ventured into such territory: he has previously made similar claims about AIDS.
Villagers in remote areas of Africa have expressed and acted on similar fears that the disease is a Western plot: some have even killed aid workers.
The current Ebola outbreak began in Guinea last December and has since spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Senegal. It has caused more than 3,300 deaths.
As Fox News reports, “no credible medical authority believes it affects races differently.”
