Duke Freshman Working As Porn Star To Pay Tuition

| by Kathryn Schroeder

A Duke University freshman is defending her choice to work as a porn star to pay her school tuition.

The woman, who calls herself “Lauren,” prefers her job as a porn star to her previous job as a waitress.

"I worked as a waitress as a job for a year in high school," Lauren told Duke’s student newspaper, The Chronicle. "Not only did it interfere with my school where I was barely sleeping and wasn't doing my work, but I also was making $400 a month after taxes."

She also found working as a waitress humiliating.

"I felt like I was being degraded and treated like s***,” Lauren said.

Lauren finds working a blue-collar job much more demeaning than starring in adult films, reports NY Daily News.

It also pays much better and she can manage the $60,000-a-year tuition at Duke University from her earnings.

A Duke University spokesman said they spent more than $130 million this year in undergraduate financial aid.

“We are one of a small number of colleges that admit students without regard to their ability to pay and meet 100 percent of their demonstrated financial need based on a careful review of the family’s circumstances,” they said.

They would not comment on Lauren’s specific financial needs.

But Lauren has spoken out to xoJane on the matter.

“I couldn't afford $60,000 in tuition, my family has undergone significant financial burden, and I saw a way to graduate from my dream school free of debt, doing something I absolutely love,” Lauren wrote to xoJane. “Because to be clear: My experience in porn has been nothing but supportive, exciting, thrilling and empowering.”

Lauren works for a rough sex website, but claims she has never been “coerced or harmed” while filming.

"Everyone has their kinks and we should not shame anyone for enjoying something that is perfectly legal and consensual for all parties involved," Lauren wrote.

“For me, shooting pornography brings me unimaginable joy. When I finish a scene, I know that I have done so and completed an honest day's work. It is my artistic outlet, my love, my happiness, my home,” she added.

Lauren’s pornographic work became public when a fellow classmate, Thomas Bagley, who had allegedly seen her films, outed her at a fraternity rush party.

He had previously sworn to keep her secret.

Once the secret was out the entire campus was buzzing about it and Lauren became the victim of mocking and attacks online, reports the Daily Mail.

“If you b***ed her, report in,” wrote one anonymous poster on the CollegiateACB message board.

Lauren did not stay quiet, having given multiple interviews since being outed, and attacking Duke University in the process.

She says Duke is a place where women have to hide their sexuality, and are held to a “virgin-wh*** dichotomy.”

Lauren claims she “feels at home” in the porn world, and not on the Duke campus.

As for her future after graduation and the effect her work in porn may have on her career as an attorney:

"I wouldn’t want to work for someone who discriminates against sex workers," Lauren wrote.
