A newborn baby was mauled to death by the family dog in a San Diego home, police say.
According to New York Daily News, a 3-day-old baby was in bed with his parents, who remain unidentified, and the family's two-year-old dog Polo. The mother reportedly coughed, startling the dog, which caused the American Staffordshire terrier-mix to bite the baby, said Sgt. Ty Nguyen, a member of the child abuse unit.
The parents rushed their newborn to the hospital, but it was too late. He was pronounced dead.
"At this time, we're looking at this as nothing more than a tragic incident," Nguyen said.
The dog was taken into custody by animal control officers. He will be held in quarantine for 10 days to determine if he has rabies. The parents can then decide if they would like to keep him.
According to ABC 13, an autopsy is currently underway to determine the newborn's cause of death.
