Dad Writes Loving Acceptance Letter to Son After Hearing He's Gay

Coming out as gay or bisexual to relatives can be one of the most stressful experiences, but for one teen, it was probably one of the most welcoming moments of his life.

A letter posted to Facebook has gone viral, as it shows the loving support of a teen named Nate from his father as he struggled to tell him he was gay.

Pro-gay clothing accessory brand FCKH8 posted the letter on their Facebook. It tells of a father who accidentally overheard his son telling a friend that he was concerned about coming out to his parents.

The letter reads:

I overheard your phone conversation with Mike last night about your plans to come out to me. The only thing I need you to plan is to bring home OJ and bread after class. We are out, like you now.

I've known you were gay since you were six, I've loved you since you were born.

- Dad
P.S. Your mom and I think you and Mike make a cute couple.”

The image of the letter was sent by Nate to the clothing brand. FCKH8 describes him as “a teen who is a fan of ours on Facebook.” They didn’t provide any other information about him.

The original version posted on Facebook contained the father’s name, but the family has asked for it to be removed because “they didn’t want to ‘make a big deal’ of it.”

But the gay community and its supporters are truly making a big deal of it, as many feel it is one of the most heartfelt ways of accepting a teen’s “coming out.”

Though many have commented on social media criticizing it for seeming as if coming out was not special or a big deal, most people are praising it for dealing with the matter in a loving way.

FCKH8 said they hope it sets an example for other parents on how to handle their kids’ sexuality.

“We hope it sets a good example for father’s to love their kids the way they were born. The fact that it has been shared by so many sadly means that this kind of acceptance is both too rare and deeply craved by LGBT people so used to being rejected by families.”
