In Tampa Bay, Florida, a drunk driver, driving without headlights, struck a Hillsborough County patrol cruiser early Sunday morning, pinning the injured deputy inside the car (video below).
The SUV, driven by Angel R. Pena, veered into the path of Sheriff Deputy Juan Lazu, who didn't see the SUV in time to avoid a head-on collision.
The crash knocked the officer's cruiser back about 45 feet, trapping Deputy Laza in the smoldering car.
Reports say that Deputy Lazu radioed for help and responding deputies pulled him from his vehicle just before both the SUV and patrol car exploded and burned.
Deputy Lazu was taken to Florida Hospital with minor injuries and released later on Sunday.
Deputies detected a strong odor of alcohol on the SUV's driver, Pena, after the crash. He was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital and arrested upon release.
Pena faces charges of driving under the influence with property damage and refusal to submit to testing. He was being held Sunday night without bail at the Hillsborough County Jail.
State law enforcement records show Pena has several previous arrests in Hillsborough County for DUI offenses. He reportedly made threats that evening, according for his former fiancee.
