On April 26, an individual using the Twitter handle @5kurr began sending messages to the Miami Police Department's Twitter account claiming he planned to rape children.
One of the tweets, for instance, consisted of the following: “@MiamiPD I’m bout. to rape a lil girl high asf Hahahahahahhahahahahahaaayyahayya.” A follow-up tweet an hour later said: "@MiamiPD you guys I have been out here taking lillte girls and I hear no sirens?Um my avi don't scare you."
According to NBC Miami, the police department took these threats seriously, and they have identified the author of the tweets as a 15-year-old from the nearby area. The teen explained to both law enforcement officials and his parents that his tweets were intended to be a joke, but he was still arrested for false reports to law enforcement. According to the New York Daily News, the third degree felony which the 15-year-old faces is punishable by up to five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.
There have been several cases of individuals being arrested for seemingly composing threats via Twitter, and Business Insider reports that the majority of the roughly dozen people arrested in these instances have been teenagers.
