Stephanie Seabury, a former Delaware middle school teacher, has pleaded guilty to one count of fourth-degree rape for having sexual intercourse and exchanging explicit photos with a 13-year-old student.
In a surveillance video obtained by police, Seabury can be seen climbing into her car with the unidentified boy outside of Fred Fifer III Middle School on February 26. She then drove him to her apartment, where they had sex. The boy notified the police of the incident two weeks later. Seabury was 22 at the time.
Seabury was charged with sexual abuse of a child by a person in a position of trust or authority and was sentenced to 18 months probation by Superior Court Judge Robert B. Young. She must register as a Tier II sex offender and has been ordered to have no contact with the victim or other children.
Officials at the middle school were contacted by police the day after the boy notified them about the encounter. Staff then helped uncover the surveillance camera tape that shows Seabury and the teenager climbing into her car together. During the investigation, police also found the inappropriate phone and picture messages sent by Seabury.
Dover Police Corporal Mark Hoffman said, “It was a very highly inappropriate relationship. Especially with a 13-year-old and a 22-year-old, and, of course, being a teacher.”
