Richard Alexander Coleman, 21, is in custody in Jefferson County, Alabama, after attacking an elderly woman and pouring rubbing alcohol down her throat. The man broke into the 93-year-old’s home and demanded money before he attacked her.
AL.com reports Jefferson County Chief Deputy Randy Christian said police were dispatched on Thursday morning to the University of Alabama, Birmingham West emergency room. According to court records, the victim is Coleman’s grandmother.
At the hospital, the victim described how she came out of the bathroom at 6:30 a.m. and was confronted by a man wearing a mask. Police say that Coleman demanded money from the victim.
After insisting that he needed her money, Coleman grabbed the victim by the neck and threw her on the ground. He then punched her in the face multiple times.
Coleman then told the victim to get her money, but she said she did not know where her wallet was. Coleman responded by pouring rubbing alcohol down her throat and punching her in the face.
Coleman then took $200 from the victim’s bedroom and left the house. Coleman was identified as the suspect and arrested later that day.
He has been charged with first-degree assault, first-degree robbery and first-degree burglary. He is being held on $620,000 bond.
After arrest, police discovered that Coleman was awaiting trial for six charges unrelated to this burglary. He was charged with theft of property, burglary and unlawful breaking and entering of a vehicle in 2014.
Coleman was also indicted for a first-degree theft charge for robbing the same victim. He used the 93-year-old woman’s debit card for an $1,800 purchase and withdrew $3,500.
Police did not comment on the relationship between the victim and suspect. While court records indicate she is Coleman’s grandmother, police do not disclose the identity of victims in a case.
Chief Deputy Christian said in a statement: “I'm sure everyone that sees this story will be shocked that someone could be sorry and low enough to do something like that to a 93 year old woman. No doubt there is a special place reserved for people capable of that. In fact I'm counting on it."
