A simple act of kindness turned tragic when an 18-year-old woman was reportedly shot dead by a hitchhiker that she picked up on the side of the road. Police are now searching for the alleged killer.
On the morning of Oct. 28, Caylee Massey and a male companion were traveling from Oklahoma City to Canton in a red pickup truck when they decided to stop to pick up a man who was standing on the side of the road looking for a ride, Inquisitr reported.
Just two miles east of Canton, 90 minutes into their drive, the hitchhiker reportedly pulled out a gun and shot Massey dead before jumping out of the car and fleeing, according to Massey's driving companion who spoke to investigators following the incident.
The driver of the truck reportedly drove to the Canton Police Department to get help, but unfortunately it was too late. Massey was pronounced dead on arrival.
It was not clear what led up to the shooting or where Massey was shot, but the shooter was identified as 23-year-old Christopher Scruggs. Scruggs is also wanted in connection to a previous assault which occurred earlier this month in Logan County. The Logan County Sheriff’s Office has considered Scruggs to be armed and dangerous.
“We are still considering him only a person of interest, someone who we believe might have information about the shooting that can help progress the case,” Jessica Brown, spokesperson for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), said, according to Inquisitr.
“Everybody is a person of interest at this point you can say that," she added. "Right now what we are doing is following the evidence following the facts of this case and they will lead us to the person who did this and we will make the arrest at that point in time.”
Sgt. Greg Valencia added that Scruggs faces cruelty charges after “he was involved in an incident a few years ago that he was in prison for where several animals were killed and mutilated.”
Massey’s family and friends were shocked to learn of her tragic death.
“I cannot believe something so awful has happened to such a sweet, loving girl,” one friend wrote on Instagram. “Caylee was one of the brightest people with a genuine heart.”
Investigators are working to find Scruggs and ask anyone with information about Massey’s death or Scrugg’s whereabouts to call the OSBI hotline at 1-800-522-8017.
